Methane is a chemical compound with the chemical formula CH4. It is the simplest alkane, and the principal component of natural gas. The abundance of methane in the Earth's atmosphere in 1998 was 1745 parts per billion, up from 700 ppb in 1750. Methane can trap about 20 times the heat of CO2. In the same time period, CO2 increased from 278 to 365 parts per million.

S Series Diffusion Sensor and Transmitter
The RKI S-Series gas sensor/transmitters are highly reliable and cost effective basic 4-20 mA transmitters for the detection of common gas hazards. The S-Series transmitters are available for LEL (catalytic), LEL (IR) CH4, LEL (IR) HC, O2, H2S, CO, or CO2 (IR). The electronics are encased inside a potted package to avoid damage from mechanical abuse or corrosion, and this assembly is installed inside an explosion-proof enclosure. All sensors are explosion-proof with flame arrestors and approved for use in hazardous atmospheres. There is also an optional version for oxygen for use in non-hazardous atmospheres.

Optical Methane Detector
The Optical Methane Detector (OMD™), is the first of the “next generation” leak detection systems which address the high cost presently associated with leak surveying. Laser Methane Gas Detector
The Methane Laser is a handheld gas detector for the remote measurement of column density for methane and methane-containing gases (natural gas or similar). Gas column density within approximately 30 meters (within 10 meters for Low Range) can be measured quickly by directing a laser beam at the portion to be inspected.
